However, our country lags behind other developed nations when it comes to recycling.
The recent revelation that up to 95% of materials in solar panels can be recovered, including silicon and aluminum, raises serious questions about Australia’s lack of a proper solar panel recycling industry. According to the Productivity Commission, reusing these materials could deliver more than $7 billion in economic benefits. It is astonishing that we are still failing to tap into this potential.
Australia’s national recovery rate sits at around 66%, with only 12.5% of plastics ever recycled. In contrast, Sweden manages to recycle nearly 99% of its waste. This stark contrast highlights Australia’s failure to adopt a circular economy approach.
As we continue to grapple with climate change and environmental degradation, it is imperative that we rethink our recycling practices. A circular economy would not only reduce waste but also create new economic opportunities. However, the lack of government action on this issue is disturbing.
The problem is not just about technology or infrastructure; it’s also about policy and leadership. In the past, products were created with little thought given to their end of life. It is only when waste builds up that governments start to act – often too late. This cycle needs to be broken.
